  • 2017-04-17 Auctioneer Ed Gold

President John LeCave called us to order at 7:30… In the Charlie’s dining room where we were relocated due to a major golf tournament at the course

The pledge was exceptional… Who started that?

The song was led by Marc Elin and God Bless America

The words to describe this event were provided by scribe Tom Boylan

    Rotarian Guests:

AG Anita Parker was introduced by Ken Moulton

    Guests of Rotarians:

Jack Hyde introduced Janet Hyde and Erna… Elle… Emma… Our Exchange Student

    Renee Hyde introduced Joeel Olstein

Tom Hassur introduced our Lobster auctioneer, Ed Gold

    Maureen Merrill introduced Remi Mowens

Dick Bishop introduced his sidekick, Madison.

    Sandie Krutz introduced Brian Chandler.

Ed Turner introduced auctioneer Ed Gold who began his presentation, because he is excited!

Warin Parker introduced our Student of The Month, Enrique Garcia who then introduced his biggest fan club, Mom, Dad, Sister and teacher.

    Student of the month:

Warin once again introduced Enrique Garcia as the student of the month and he introduced us to his passion for helping others. In his younger days he was surrounded by people who were I need and through a program offered at the SRJC he found a way to help others. He took the course on Certified Nursing Assistant and that is leading him forward. A great story of how he turned away from playing football to finding his future.

    Announcements:

Steve Klick reminds us that the Chili Cook-off is Saturday Noon to 4 pm on the Town Green. This is a fundraiser and he needs a few chili slingers.

Bill Carson introduced us to the new golf tournament to be held at Windsor Golf. The pros are here and they are open to anyone showing up to wander the course and find your favorite for the Symetra Golf Tournament. The hope is this is the first year of many for the prestigious tournament featuring the rising stars of the LPGA.

Joelle Olsen gave us an introduction to a new movement to promote the arts, including music in Windsor. She invited members with an interest in seeing the arts community evolve to join her and others for a breakfast breakout session and a good discussion on ideas.  No funds raised, but ideas abound.

Craig Curreri is looking for a couple of volunteers for today’s Dictionary hand out at Cali Cal Meca.

Warin Parker needs a few volunteers to meet Monday April 17 at 4pm to go over scholarship entries.

Carol Martin invited us to attend a choir concert this Friday April 7 at the Santa Rosa Bible Church in Santa Rosa. There is another chorus program to be held on Saturday April 22 at the Presbyterian Church of the Roses in Santa Rosa.

Pres John thanked everyone for attending the just past District Assembly. Kudos to those who worked it and attended.

Ed Turner re-introduced us to Ed Gold, our Lobster Feed auctioneer. He shared that Ed G. Grew up in the era of Hollywood as his father was a movie producer. He wound up becoming an entertainer working with people like Cat Stevens. Ed G. has been recognized for much of his career for his humanitarian work and accolades came with that effort. He started his auctioneering in the wine business and now runs the charitable auction company and only works for charities.

Ed G. brought this personality to the lectern and challenged us to add exceptional, experiential and exciting items to the auction. He wants us to think about who we know and who can get access to interesting auction lots. That is our challenge today and the rest of the time between now and the Lobster Feed.

An example of interesting ideas… Someone called a quarry and asked if they would allow someone to come and blow up the quarry. The Quarry was happy to offer a quarry and the ability to drive movers, have a barbecue, a fun day at the quarry… Sold for $5,000.00.

Someone made an arrangement to allow a bidder drive the Zamboni at the Shark Tank… After driving the Zamboni, they got to have dinner in the players dining room… $3,000.00

Ed G says it is all about the access versus the ask. If you have an idea, let him, or our Ed T. Know what you have in mind.

Enthusiasm is what is needed to make an event pop. To add excitement to the auction… You need to add excitement in describing the event and the items we are offering.  He’ll see us at the auction.

Lobster man showed up and raised the roof with some cheering… Are we ready for the event?

Prior to the event, there will be quality auction lubricant for the public. There are 6 wineries and 6 beer brewery representing at the event. There will be non-alcoholic beverages too.

Add in some bourbon tasting and champagne. Life is good for bidders.

Jack Hyde and Anna Smith are co-chairs for silent auction. Jack asked us to find something unique, something you are passionate about. Gift certificates, gift certificates are also welcome. Plan to bring in something with a value of $50, but don’t hesitate to bring a smaller gift that can be combined with another to bring the value up.

Michael Juric says there are buttons on the website WindsorLobsterFeed.com and you can find your tickets there,or send a friend to the website. Bev Graham is looking for your guest list, so she can make the registration so much easier. Tom Hassur says we have room for between 320 and 400 guests but to do that we need to generate the excitement from within.

Bill Conklin gave us a preview for auction items, including a villa in Italy, a ride in a WWII vintage airplane, a sailboat on the Bay, a salmon trip offered by Warin Parker’s and the follow up salmon cook off at Ken & Pam Moulton’s… and… What ideas can you bring to the auction?

Mr. Lobster says to get talkative and promote, promote, promote. Be sure to let him know that you are committed to a table.

Pres John closed the meeting reinforcing what we just heard and reminded us that if we want to do things in the community, the Lobster Feed is our vehicle.

What’s in the pot? $210 and it could be Sandi Krutz’s if she finds the quarter… But she didn’t.

John and Donna LeCave kicked off their love story for how they met.

Donna was a sophomore when she met Pres. John. She caught the eye of John… The senior and they wound up typing together. Her yearbook held a special message and 6 years later they started dating.

    Susan and John Nelson

Sue was reading the afternoon Press Democrat when this tall guy showed up at her family’s home to make arrangements for her sister’s double date… With some red haired girl that never materialized. John saw Sue and decided that he didn’t want to date a red head, he wanted to date Sue. They celebrate 40 years married this year.

    Joe and Pat Deacon

February 7, 1972 Joe met Pat… It was some enchanted evening. A friend introduced him to Pat on a night when she was getting ready to date someone else. Joe waited until the next day and took her on a picnic… Prior to her next date that night. He wound up manipulating flowers that other suitors had left on a porch… He threw away the other cards and wrote “Love Joe.” It must have worked because they are celebrating 44 years married.

    Anna and Stan Smith

Newly divorced Anna also moved to Santa Rosa and a friend said to place an ad in the newspaper, or respond. She did and there first date he wound up getting stood up…only because he didn’t give her a phone number so she could call and say her children were sick and she couldn’t go. Somehow they made it to a second date and that eventually turned into a 32 year marriage with a wonderful blended family.looking to meet new people or two relating to love

    Ken and Pam Moulton

They met each other when working together and married… To other people. After 6 years they were both single and a friend suggested they ought to meet one another. Although she didn’t date anyone in the school district that they both worked for, she did agree to a meeting on a Sunday afternoon when he showed up with a rose… That afternoon turned into an evening and that made it to early morning, 4 am. They might not have been looking for marriage, but it found them 11 months later. They are celebrating their 28th year of wedded bliss.

    Robin and Carlos

Their relationship started as best friends that loved each other. They both were previously married and combined two families into one with 4 children between them. Their friendship from the coffee house grew into a low key relationship and their kids made it a little more official when they met and her daughter let her future siblings know they were dating.

She also introduced a portrait of health for Sonoma County, which offers stats on how to measure health and the effects of economics on a human development score.

Susan Quiqley spoke to us about Windsor Wellness Partnership. The organizations goal is to see Windsor become the healthiest Town in Sonoma County. They have elevated their status in the community by building partnerships. They need our help for some early morning gathering of volunteers. They plan to meet on October 22nd at 8 AM, or thereabouts, at the Journey’s End in Santa Rosa on Mendocino. Best to connect with either to get the specifics. If you need training, you will have to go one extra step, but we are told it is fun.

Each year we are asked to become hands-on with a demonstration. This competition has sent a local Windsor team to compete with others in the world including China and France.

Heather sent out her team to intimidate the Rotarians in the room by lurking over their creative attempts. It didn’t work. We had some fun and had an opportunity to build not only a project, but friendship.

Neck massager… Tops of mountains can be peaceful and beautiful. Claymation got a start with one table. Another table’s work was meant to be a secret… No one is really talking about this one. MJ Girard and team used the tin foil to create an imaginary ball and a pumpkin maze.

The team wrapped another wonderful experience and headed off to school. Heather also reminded us that she heads a choir that will sing for free. They just need a call to invite them.

We were released early to get some rest after staying up all night watching the Giants and the Cubbies play a heck of a game.

  • 2016-10-04 Linda Kelly – Town of Windsor

President John LeCave rang the bell promptly at 7:30 AM

Joan Mora provided the lead for the Pledge of allegiance and no one took a knee.

Anna Smith shared a few inspirations from baseball, quoting Vin Scully and a few others with a suggestion to be a winner you keep good friends and a strong bullpen.

Marc Elin had to text himself to remind him he was the songmeister. We had a rousing verse of James Brown’s “I feel good,” with dance!

Visiting Rotarians gave way to guests of Rotarians:

Chris Landwehr introduced JB Leap and Carol Martin

Joe Deacon introduced Windsor Town Manager Linda Kelly

Jack Hyde introduced Ella… Our Swedish daughter.

     Announcements:

The Rotary Foundation dinner is on October 15th at the Flamingo. We will be celebrating with Rotarians all the things we have accomplished for the year. Look for your email invite. If you have an item to throw in the basket we will provide for the raffle, please bring it next week.

Golf Tournament, Color Stride, Trampoline jumping, and a Calistoga BBQ are a few of the events going on around the county. Check the District website: www.rotary5130.org

Sunshine report was provided by Diane Brabitz. She has asked that we let her know when those memorable events happen in our fellow Rotarian lives.

Dick Bishop is open to low fat, low salt food, and most important, he is looking for a few friends to drop by.

Hotlanta is the place to be for the 2017 Rotary International conference.

Plan ahead for December 3rd and our Windsor Rotary Holiday Party. More info to follow, or nudge Sandie Krutz.

We will be gathering at President John’s office, 70 Stony Point Road suite C, Santa Rosa. This is an opportunity to develop a community outreach program to connect Rotary with groups in Windsor in need of help. He has beer and wine. 6:00 – 7:30 PM.

A group of fellow club members are pro active when it comes to Rotary opportunities. Wally Krutz, Sandie Krutz and Pegi Ball are working on an idea to find a van to help people in the community get around. Leigh Mateas took care of securing a tree for Rotaract to participate in the Charlie Brown Christmas Tree program on the Town Green. Sandie Krutz and Donna LeCave are off to Mexico to do good Rotary work, as is Maureen Merrill. Steve Klik is off to South America to continue a clean water project he worked on last year with Ukiah and Santa Rosa East Rotary Club.

I heard there was $600 plus in our pot and the Raiders are still disappointing most of the club. Just ask M.J. Girard who searched for Raider Nation but found another team.

    Program:

Warin Parker introduced our Town Manager, Linda Kelly, who has been with the Town for the past three years. Things are looking up for Windsor. She introduced us to the amazing history and the vision that makes Windsor such a desirable place to live. We are an award winning town with recycled water, healthy living, and much more. She introduced survey results that say that 7 in 10 residents feel Windsor is a great place to live.

Ms. Kelly then introduced us to the various taxes and services these monies provide for the community. Taxes are always a hot topic and Howard Jarvis was mentioned for locking in a tax rate for Windsor homeowners. Linda shared that none of our personal income taxes are designated for our Town. Only a 12-15% of property taxes are returned to the Town. Our sales tax is currently 8.25%, which is .75 over the State average, but on par for the rest of Sonoma County. Next time you make a purchase out of area, please remember that Windsor sees approximately 1% of sales tax returned to the Town coffers when the purchase is made in town. Transit Occupancy Tax is currently 14% with 12% earmarked for the Town. Apparently visitors to the Town of Windsor provide approximately $2 million annually. That number should grow with the opening of the new hotel on Redwood Blvd.

The average tax paid by a homeowner to the town of Windsor is just under $85 per Month.

We were asked to review the variety of measures we will be voting on in November, which would increase taxes for the County

End of the day… We live in a nice place.

  • 2016-08-16 District Governor Wulff Reinhold

    Flag salute: Anna Smith

    Inspiration by Ken Moulton… Gratitude!

Songstress was Bev Graham who placed the three amigos (Pres John, PE Steve Klick, PEN Warin Parker) on an imaginary podium so we could sing the national anthem.

Scribe duties fell to Tom Boylan

    Visiting Rotarians:

Pres. John introduced District Governor Wulff Reinhold

Renee Hyde introduced Assist Governor Nita Parker

    Ken Moulton introduced Pam Moulton

Warin Parker introduced Joy Wemms, our English member

    Guests Of Rotarians:

John Hackenburg introduced his wife Jean

Ed Turner introduced his wife Louise Turner

Warin Parker introduced Doug Williams as a guest for the last time

    Announcements:

Pres John suggested we sign up for SCARC on August 29th with Valley of the Moon.

We discussed the Clayton Fire in Lake County and the need to help. There have been numerous communications from DG Wulff regarding how to help and whom to speak with to learn more of what is needed. Take a peek at the District website news section to see up to the minute info.

Because of the Clayton Fire, Wally Krutz suggested the hands on project for this weekend, which is supposed to install smoke alarms in the trailer park homes Saturday at 7:15 am. There is a training to show how to install this Friday at 5:pm in the Red Cross meeting room off Airport Blvd. If you can’t make that meeting, you can still show up at the trailer park and receive a brief training. Wally will keep us posted.

We brought in a new member today, Doug Williams was inducted by DG Wulff, because the two of them have been friends through their profession for many years.

DG Wulff then went on to recognize John and Jean Hackenburg for their reaching the Major Donor level of giving, and joining the bequest society. They too have a history with our DG as they all started at the same Rohnert Park-Cotati Rotary Club.

Pres John then discussed the importance of International Projects that are implemented by Rotary International through the Rotary Foundation.

DG Wulff introduced a basket of Goodies from Rotary Club of Arcadia. The winner of the drawing is Anna Smith.

    Program:

AG Nita Parker introduced DG Wulff, whose background has been filled with numerous awards for his role as a Rotary Club and District leader. The accolades in the private sector include his role as a Fire District Board Member, and a retired police Sergeant. He and his wife Paula have two sons, one is an archeologist and the other is the president of Southern Sonoma Rotaract.

DG Wulff opened his speech letting us know that he considers all Rotarians family and rather than take credit for the leader role, he is here to educate, motivate and inspire all of us. He works for us.

The District has 6 counties and 46 Clubs. His role with Rotary International is as an officer charged with being a liaison for individual clubs.

Rotary needs to grow and this is a major task for clubs. DG Wulff can provide support to allow us to engage members and potential new members. We are a service club, so it makes great sense to invite potential new and younger members to our service projects.

He introduced the change to the rule that we must have meetings. The new rules allow for the club and its Board to create the meeting schedule that works best for the club. Attendance is no longer required to be 100%, however every Rotarian is expected to provide support at the 100% level.

We can express and show our value to our community through improved communication that tells Rotary’s story. Brag about what we do and attract new members. Our new Rotary pin is very clear with the word Rotary preceding the Rotary Cog. He asked that we start wearing the new pin.

Our Rotary Foundation started in 1917 with a $26.50 donation. Today the Foundation has more than $3 billion. The goal for this year is to raise more than $300 million. Ideally those dollars will be in part, other people’s money. Don’t hesitate to ask for a donation to the RI Foundation, where their dollars are beneficial to the world.

DG Wulff would like to see our club work on a peace project, which he has challenged all clubs within the district to create. As a former policeman, he is certain there can be an affect from our actions to promote peace. A peace garden with a plaque will attract understanding.

Share stories of Rotary. He shared a story of how he met an elderly woman while working on the Hands on Project to change light bulbs, which led to repairing drapes and illuminating her home. The woman was moved by his interaction and that she has light for the first time in 5 years. These feel good stories are what we need to spread to grow Rotary in our community.

Pres John recognized PP Marc Elinfor a wonderful year and the head start he is giving to John showing him how to maneuver the set up and the computer glitches.  Accolades were sent out and a past president pin was presented.

    Program:

Pres. John gave us a preview of his past and future. He re introduced Donna and his family and then went on to tell us he was born in Santa Rosa in 1961. He spent quite a bit of time exploring all the grammar schools in Santa Rosa and eventually wound up graduating from Santa Rosa High. He met Donna at high school, but delayed pursuing her until after graduating from Sacramento State in 1984. He then went after Donna and got married in 1986. He spent the early years of marriage in the East Bay as an accountant, but moved back to Windsor in 1989 to start a family.

Look forward to spending more time this year with craft talks, because Pres John believes Rotary wants to start promoting our professional lives as well as our humanitarian side.

He left accounting in 1991 and went into mortgage banking. He is Fountaingrove Mortgage, an independent contractor working with Pinnacle Mortgage. John controls his own company and enjoys sending out the good news of dropping mortgage rates.

A Rotary moment is letting us know that in October 2006 Chris Landwehr invited him to Rotary. John was looking for something to give back to community and Rotary offered that. He suggested that he opted to accept the role of president because it was his way of giving back to Rotary, and it would force him to know more about Rotary.

Pres John asked that we do a little exercise… By leaning our heads to adjust to the sideways video he was showing us. PP Marc came to his rescue and held the projector on its side. The video looked a lot like a Richard Simmons promo, but the voice was similar to our new president… The message was all about flexing. Flex your mind and flex your muscles. Know that you have the support of 63 fellow members all flexing in unison. The challenge is to be flexible!

We then were introduced to the new RI president John F.Germ. The theme this year is Rotary Serving Humanity.

We were assigned a task: Take a 3 x 5 card and write down a Rotary word. We can define that word. Pres John plans to bring these words to life throughout the year.

Retention is the focus this year. 2-5 is a theme and he wants us all to get involved. His current team, besides us, are the Amigos’, which includes Pres John, PE Steve Klick, PEN Warren Parker, and past pres Marc. Together they are looking to provide consistency for the club.

Incoming board members include PE Steve Klick, PEN Warin Parker, Ed Turner, Leah Hansen, Wally Krutz, Bill Bolster, Sandy Krutz, Joan Mora and Daniel Myers.

This year we introduce a Cabinet consisting of past and future leaders. Everyone is invited to become a member of the Cabinet.

Action Team is the new title for those who actually do the work. There will be numerous groups and the goal is to have 100% participation: Fundraising, Community, Foundation, Membership and Programs. You are invited to become a member of an Action Team.

Go out and do something Rotarian today!
