In Bill Arnone’s absence Allen Christensen led us in “God Bless America”

    Visiting Rotarians:

Guests:                                                                                                                                                       Dick Bishop introduced his personal assistant Madison, & Chris Landwehr introduced Remy Moens.

Ella, our daughter from Sweden sent a big Thank you to all that attended and contributed to her Western Safari Fundraiser, she raised over $1000.00 towards the trip.   Western Safari is a fabulous trip not only for Youth Exchange but Rotarians as well.  Sergio Sales has participated in the trip for more years than I know and has spearheaded the trip for the last 4 years, this year due to Glenda’s health issues Sergio is unable to participate, he is looking for Rotarians or friends of Rotary that would like to tour the Western States, including the Grand Canyon in this special and unique way.  Please contact Sergio or Tom Hassur for more details.

We were also fortunate to have Emily Kastning, Youth Exchange out bound, heading to Germany.  She is a resident of Windsor so under our wing but is being sponsored by Rotary Club of Clear Lake.    It is wonderful when the YE students attend our meetings, learn more about Rotary and become part of our Rotary Family before doing their exchange.  It also provides them the opportunity to tempt us with their homemade sweets and do a little fundraising for their trip.  Thank you for your continued support.

Pam Moulton & Sue Nelson last year did a photo shoot of the homeless in Healdsburg and had a showing at the Paul Mahder Art Gallery along with drawings by students from local schools.  The project was a great success, creating awareness of the homeless, ways we can help and changing the stigma of the word “homeless”.  Pam and Sue have been invited back for a second project, however, this year they are putting a twist on the photo shoot and handing the cameras to the homeless.

Paul Mahder Art Gallery in Healdsburg will be displaying the Photo’s, Art Work by homeless and Students Saturday May 13th-May 22nd.   In addition to the Gallery show, portraits were selected along with the individual’s bio to create a book that will be available for sale;   proceeds will go to North Sonoma County Services.

Glenda Sales will remain in Sutter Hospital until Thursday or Friday while they continue to battle the infection that has invaded her body, keep her in your thoughts and prayers, she also appreciates a text or a visit.

  • 2017-04-18 Windsor Rotary Community Foundation

    Flag Salute:  Jack Hyde

Inspiration:  Maureen Merrill with the message, “I found you at Rotary.”

Song was actually a chant in rounds led by Warin Parker:  “April showers bring May flowers.” Reminding us that we still need the rain to fill the underground aquifer.

    There were no visiting Rotarians.

    Introduction of Guests of Rotarians:

    MemberGuestNotes
    Dick BishopMadisonHis personal assistant
    Jack HydeEllaOur Youth Exchange Daughter
    Ed TurnerLeslieHis daughter
Susan ColeMardie DonaldsonAmerican Cancer Society Windsor Relay For Life Team Captain
Warin ParkerYesenia SanchezWindsor High School Student of the Month

Yesenia introduced her parents, Enrique and Elia, her sister, Iris, and her teacher, Paul Kinunen.

    Announcements:

Warin Parker brings us our Student of the Month.  He brought up Paul Kinunen, Yesenia’s teacher in the Digital Media Academy, and Paul told us why Yesenia was chosen as Student of the Month for Rotary.  She has the grades, the athletics, the service, but even more than excelling in all these areas, she has the professionalism.  She has a special touch with film making that sets her apart.

Yesenia spoke and told about her love for all the arts – both studio and digital.  She also loves sports and has played soccer, practiced tae kwan do, basketball, and track and field.  (This reporter thinks there were even more sports mentioned, but can’t recall them!)  When she found the digital arts, she knew that’s what she wanted to pursue.  She has an over 4.0 GPA and a clear view of making films in her future.

Susan Cole introduced Mardie Donaldson, who is a breast cancer survivor, to tell us about the Windsor Relay for Life, American Cancer Society’s major fundraiser, which is a 24-hour walk to fund cancer research and find a cure.  It will be held in Keiser Park on June 15-16.  Mardie is team captain of Life Savers, and Susan Cole walks on her team.  Mardie thanked the Rotary Club of Windsor for being a sponsor this year.  We will have signage up at Keisier Park recognizing our contribution.  Susan invited everyone to walk a lap with her, particularly at 9PM at night, when the luminarias are lit remembering those we lost to cancer and those who are survivors.

May 2 at Rotary is Teacher Appreciation Day, as Ken Moulton reminded us.   It is always one of the most rich and compelling meetings to learn about the teachers who guide our children.  A don’t miss meeting!

May 6 is the Windsor Day Parade from 9-11AM and Ken Moulton needs a few more volunteers to jump in and assist a bit.  The parade celebrates the 25th anniversary of the Town of Windsor, and so many of our club members were involved in our town’s beginnings.

Paul Harris’ birthday was April 19.

Thursday, April 27, 4:30 PM, is a fundraiser for our Youth Exchange student, Ella, at President John’s house.  Purpose is to help Ella raise funds for the Western Safari trip.

Sandy Krutz did a fine job of reminding us that the Lobster Fest is “all hands on deck”.  It is our major fundraiser for the year and supplies the funds we need to do the work in the community that we love to do.   Art is building a lobster trap for the gym entrance, and the decoration committee is hard at work to change it from a gym to a celebration site.

It is up to all of us to fill the tables.   Put your names on a plate and fill at table.  We need Silent Auction items.  Think creatively.  One good idea was a basket of children’s items – a basket of books, perhaps!  How about a spa basket, with certificates for massage, mani/pedi, hair, facials, etc.  Go out in the community and ASK!

The featured item in the Live Auction today is the movie pass, which is always a high-bidding item.  Unlimited movies to the Raven, Airport Cinemas, Roxy and Summerfield.   You could go to a movie every day of the year.  An added bonus that got oooh’s and aaah’s from the crowd was a possible “Popcorn Pass’ this year.   Yes!

Renee Hyde reminds us that we have Ella here through July and then in August we get a girl from Switzerland.  We need three host families for our incoming Rotary student.  Also, check with Renee and sign up for Foundation auto donations now.   And fill those blue cups for polio eradication.

While we were waiting for the computers to do their thinking, Marie Coakley treated us to a special story about polio in the 1950’s.   Marie was an 18-year old student at Kansas University and received her polio vaccination from Dr. Jonas Salk.  Now that’s polio prestige.

Speakers:  Ed Turner and Brian Ling

Ed offered a clear presentation about the two separate club entities:  Rotary Club of Windsor and Windsor Rotary Community Foundation.  He reported that the Lobster Fest last year had net proceed of $26,250.   We would all like to see that number higher, hence the move to the Boys and Girls Club gym, which will save us a great deal of money.

Most focus was on the WRCF Endowment account, which has a balance of $313,000.  And, we have still never spent any money out of the account.

Here are some of the interesting numbers that support our community work:

    Operating Account:

    • $680,650 = Community Service funding to date
    • $94,000 = Cash contributed for Skate Park
    • $50,000 = Boys and Girls Club Gym Floor
    • $132,750 = Scholarships awarded to graduating seniors
    • $43,535 = Youth Exchange Program

    Endowment Account:

    • $0 program funding from the endowment account.
    • 100% reinvestment of dividends and capital gains.
    • $4,989 John Lewis $$ in 2016
    • $6,454 = 2016 dividends
    • $11,005 = 2016 capital gains
    • 86% = 2016 investment income.

Brian Ling spoke about the history of the Town of Windsor and told us about John Lewis, the father of our Club.  It is because of John that we call members who contribute at least $1,000 to our WRCF, John Lewis Fellows.  There were plaques for the many club members who are John Lewis Fellows.

Inspiration: Susan Cole inspiration came from her experiences in “forest meditation” . Specifically, her walks through Armstrong Grove inspired her with words from Robert Louis Stevenson: “It is not so much for its beauty that the forest makes a claim upon men’s hearts, as for that subtle something, that quality of air that emanation from old trees, that so wonderfully changes and renews a weary spirit.” Song: JB Leap led the Club in a rendition of “Row, row, row your boat”. Pam is a civil engineer by training and served in the Peace Corp in Nepal before becoming an employee off the SC Water District in 1991. Pam addressed the status of Sonoma County beginning with an overview of the origins of water storage in the County with the creation of the SC Water District in 1959. Water storage became a serious issue with the flooding of the Russian River in the 1940’s. The Army Corps of Engineers became involved in the 50”s with the planning and eventual building of Lake Mendocino and Lake Sonoma. Both were constructed for flood control but became a source for the storage of water as well. Today, Sonoma County gets is water from both lakes and Lake Pillsbury, built later and maintained by PG and E. Sonoma County Water District provides water to Windsor, Santa Rosa, Rohnert Park, Valley of the Moon , Sonoma, Petaluma and Cotati. The water District is currently focusing on water conservation and additional sources of water including managing ground water, storage of storm water and finding additional aquifers. Climate change is being address as “climate adaptation” as change is inevitable. Warin once again introduced Enrique Garcia as the student of the month and he introduced us to his passion for helping others. In his younger days he was surrounded by people who were I need and through a program offered at the SRJC he found a way to help others. He took the course on Certified Nursing Assistant and that is leading him forward. A great story of how he turned away from playing football to finding his future.

    Announcements:

Steve Klick reminds us that the Chili Cook-off is Saturday Noon to 4 pm on the Town Green. This is a fundraiser and he needs a few chili slingers.

Bill Carson introduced us to the new golf tournament to be held at Windsor Golf. The pros are here and they are open to anyone showing up to wander the course and find your favorite for the Symetra Golf Tournament. The hope is this is the first year of many for the prestigious tournament featuring the rising stars of the LPGA.

Joelle Olsen gave us an introduction to a new movement to promote the arts, including music in Windsor. She invited members with an interest in seeing the arts community evolve to join her and others for a breakfast breakout session and a good discussion on ideas.  No funds raised, but ideas abound.

Craig Curreri is looking for a couple of volunteers for today’s Dictionary hand out at Cali Cal Meca.

Warin Parker needs a few volunteers to meet Monday April 17 at 4pm to go over scholarship entries.

Carol Martin invited us to attend a choir concert this Friday April 7 at the Santa Rosa Bible Church in Santa Rosa. There is another chorus program to be held on Saturday April 22 at the Presbyterian Church of the Roses in Santa Rosa.

Pres John thanked everyone for attending the just past District Assembly. Kudos to those who worked it and attended.

Ed Turner re-introduced us to Ed Gold, our Lobster Feed auctioneer. He shared that Ed G. Grew up in the era of Hollywood as his father was a movie producer. He wound up becoming an entertainer working with people like Cat Stevens. Ed G. has been recognized for much of his career for his humanitarian work and accolades came with that effort. He started his auctioneering in the wine business and now runs the charitable auction company and only works for charities.

Ed G. brought this personality to the lectern and challenged us to add exceptional, experiential and exciting items to the auction. He wants us to think about who we know and who can get access to interesting auction lots. That is our challenge today and the rest of the time between now and the Lobster Feed.

An example of interesting ideas… Someone called a quarry and asked if they would allow someone to come and blow up the quarry. The Quarry was happy to offer a quarry and the ability to drive movers, have a barbecue, a fun day at the quarry… Sold for $5,000.00.

Someone made an arrangement to allow a bidder drive the Zamboni at the Shark Tank… After driving the Zamboni, they got to have dinner in the players dining room… $3,000.00

Ed G says it is all about the access versus the ask. If you have an idea, let him, or our Ed T. Know what you have in mind.

Enthusiasm is what is needed to make an event pop. To add excitement to the auction… You need to add excitement in describing the event and the items we are offering.  He’ll see us at the auction.

Lobster man showed up and raised the roof with some cheering… Are we ready for the event?

Prior to the event, there will be quality auction lubricant for the public. There are 6 wineries and 6 beer brewery representing at the event. There will be non-alcoholic beverages too.

Add in some bourbon tasting and champagne. Life is good for bidders.

Jack Hyde and Anna Smith are co-chairs for silent auction. Jack asked us to find something unique, something you are passionate about. Gift certificates, gift certificates are also welcome. Plan to bring in something with a value of $50, but don’t hesitate to bring a smaller gift that can be combined with another to bring the value up.

Michael Juric says there are buttons on the website WindsorLobsterFeed.com and you can find your tickets there,or send a friend to the website. Bev Graham is looking for your guest list, so she can make the registration so much easier. Tom Hassur says we have room for between 320 and 400 guests but to do that we need to generate the excitement from within.

Bill Conklin gave us a preview for auction items, including a villa in Italy, a ride in a WWII vintage airplane, a sailboat on the Bay, a salmon trip offered by Warin Parker’s and the follow up salmon cook off at Ken & Pam Moulton’s… and… What ideas can you bring to the auction?

Mr. Lobster says to get talkative and promote, promote, promote. Be sure to let him know that you are committed to a table.

Pres John closed the meeting reinforcing what we just heard and reminded us that if we want to do things in the community, the Lobster Feed is our vehicle.
