    COVID UPDATE

Total Cases:        27,774  (last week 27,361)

    New Cases:            Fri      69

    Sat     64

    Sun    70

Mon   68                       This is a total for 4 days of 271  (last week was 361 and week before was 479)

Deaths:  295     (last week 287)   – we are no longer seeing the deaths in senior facilities as most have been vaccinated.   However, we are seeing a greater number of fatalities in people at home and even younger – this relates to greater widespread transmission.  Here is Sonoma County, we have had 2 deaths in the 35-44 age group, 20 in the 45-54 group, 33 in the 55-64 age group, 55 in the 65-74 group and  185 in the 75 and higher ages.      But, please be aware that we have actually had under age 5 year olds hospitalized.

Hospitalized:   37 confirmed and 1 suspected    (last week 48 confirmed and 1 suspected)      13 Available ICU beds so we are seeing less hospitalized patients with COVID.  This is quite a drop in hospitalized individuals and number of available ICU beds, but we do continue to see people practice unsafe habits.  Unfortunately we continue to see COVID fatigue and behaviors being practiced as unsafe as well as the vaccinated individuals thinking that masks can be removed, they can hug others and begin to socialize or travel.   Remember obtaining the vaccine, even 2 doses does not mean you cannot transmit the virus or still come down with it; however it will prevent real illness and possible death.    Until 85% of our population is vaccinated, we do not have herd immunity and we continue to have several other stronger strains of the virus that has been detected here in the US.

We have tested a Total of 530,887 and 24,065 recovered   (last week 514,892 in our county with 24,065 people recovered)

Still seeing the largest number of cases in the Latinos (65%  with them only being 27% of the populations and whites are only 27% with them being 63% of the population )

Still seeing the largest level of positivity in Service and sales (18.4%),  then those unemployed and home care (my industry) at 2.5%.

Close contact (meaning close family or friend spread) is still a great risk as with household exposure and unknown being high.  We are seeing in our own employees positivity in our Latinos/Hispanics and being exposed by family members working in other industries or ignoring travel or gathering warnings.

Vaccines were begun….  As of Feb. 21st, 118,641  residents in Sonoma County have received the vaccine (last week 92,196).    Fully vaccinated individuals now at 6.39% and adults with at least one vaccine dose is at 22.47%.   Vaccination roll out continues to be slow and chaotic and disorganized plus as of late Friday the online registration system was shut down and continues to be.   Vaccine delivery has been delayed because of the severe weather experience in the Mid-West and vaccine has not gotten to us.  Once the vaccine is delivered the county is looking at adding clinics and extending hours to make up for time lost.  The county also expanded those eligible for vaccine to 65 and up, education and child care, food service workers, grocery workers and agricultural employees.     In addition, the registration form has gotten more difficult to complete and difficult to find.   Seniors continue to have many issues finding and scheduling of appointments because of lack of computer skills, poor vision, decreased mental / cognitive skills and even if they obtain an appointment, many need transportation to get there at the same time we experienced vaccine delays.

Remember, outside family members or close friends are not part of your bubble and unless they have been tested and isolated for 10-14 days before being with you and you the same, it can be risky.   And if you see others from outside our county, have them and you quarantine for 10-14 days after.    We cannot be too careful!  The County continues to ask that we stay home and practice the 3 W’s – wash your hands, wear your mask and watch your distance.    And, they continue to request we not travel where we can become exposed at restaurants, restrooms, hotels even if it is outside activities.   There are many other variants of this virus that have now been identified and until we have enough immunity, it is best for all of us if we stay home.

Please do not let your guard down; even receiving the vaccine means until we have the majority of our community vaccinated we need to practice safe habits and stay in our bubbles.   Remember it does take time for any antibodies to form and only one vaccine only promises about 40% efficacy.   Efficacy is greatly increased with the second dose and we need to strive for “herd immunity”.    Once you have had both vaccines you can begin to socialize with other people who have also had both vaccines.    But, do not let COVID fatigue get to you and get sloppy in protecting yourself and those that you love.   And do not think this is still not serious.   Please become a believer – the life you safe could be someone dear to you!

    Thanks

    VACCINE INFO

    From Your Rotary Nurse:

The County has notified me of a shortage of vaccine due to weather / transportation and some on production.   Right now they are trying to use the vaccine they have to be able to give to people who need their 2nd dose.    The County will be notifying me as soon as they are able to open up the schedule again for new, 1st time doses.     If you or any senior you know are having difficulty obtaining an appointment, please do not hesitate to contact me.   I really do not mind being the contact or registering people.

Michael was kind enough to help me take the information I need to register someone and make me a fillable form – if you contact me I can send that for you or your family/friend to provide me the info either on the form or just send it.   Once I have appointments again, I will be happy to help everyone I can.    The eligibility is now 65 and older, health care workers, patients in senior facilities, home care workers, child care, education, food service and agricultural workers.    If someone fits into a category, I can help.   When I register them for the 1st dose, they are now giving a date for the 2nd dose to ensure that everyone is accounted for in getting their 2nd dose.

Please consider getting the vaccination.   We want our economy kick started, people not to die and I just want to hug someone…….if you have fears or concerns, I am more than happy to answer your questions or get answers from the experts.

    Thanks so much

    Proposed:  Covid Vaccine Access Project

    Fund Raiser

Michael Juric talked about last week’s discussion on the upcoming Fund Raiser in April.

He asked Sue Nelson and Diane Brabetz to talk about service to the community. Sue spoke about the Vaccine Access Project and explained the number of senior housing centers, mobile home parks, and homes we have in Windsor.  Diane explained the problems these seniors have trying to make appointments for the vaccine and also getting transportation to the facilities.

It was suggested we created The Covid Access Project to help address these problems.

The project was approved by the members to be included in our Fund Raiser.

Guest Speaker – Gil Sanborn “Aid to the Secretary of The Arm in California” was introduced by JB Leep.

Mr. Sanborn talked about “Russian Information Warfare”.  The information he supplied was enlightening and far more than most of us knew.  Many of us thought he should be interviewed on TV to educate people about what has been going on for years.

    Meeting Closed at 8:30

Gil Sanborn stayed on after that to answer questions.

    COVID UPDATE

Total Cases:        26,189  (last week 25,141)

    New Cases:            Fri    147

                                    Sat    167

                                    Sun   167

Mon   81                       This is a total for 4 days of 562  (last week was 672)

Deaths:  265     (last week 251)   – seeing a greater number of fatalities in people at home and even younger – this relates to greater widespread transmission

Hospitalized:   78 confirmed and 2 suspected    (last week 92 confirmed and 2 suspected)    What appears different in the number of hospitalized patients with COVID is that less seem to be needing ICU care as we have better treatments.  We continue to see people practice unsafe habits – they travel, they are not consistent with wearing a mask or wear it incorrectly, they enlarge their “bubble” and they are taking vacations.   Numbers are going down so it is really hard to get by in that we need to continue to be vigilant.   Until 85% of our population is vaccinated, we do not have herd immunity and we have several other stronger strains of the virus that has been detected here in the US.

We have tested a Total of 483,449 and 20,761 recovered   (last week 467,113 in our county with 19,197 people recovered)

Still seeing the largest number of cases in the Latinos (65%  with them only being 27% of the populations and whites are only 27% with them being 63% of the population )

Still seeing the largest level of positivity in Service and sales (18%),  then those unemployed and home care (my industry) at 2.7%.

As of Feb. 1st 48,014, residents in Sonoma County have received the vaccine (last week 31,382).    Vaccination roll out continues to be slow and nowhere where we hoped they would be by now.    The County and Optum Serve are having difficulties in the scheduling of appointments and allowing the proper category of people to receive the vaccine.   Many people who are not health care workers, nor over 75 were allowed to book and receive a vaccine and thousands had their appointments canceled, rebooked and canceled again.   There is outrage in the community that this is not working and we have stalled giving vaccines.   We were set to roll out vaccinations to the schools so we could plan reopening of the schools.   That was postponed because of this snafu.   In addition, the registration system that is being used now is cumbersome (it took me 25 minutes to do one person and even after practice, it still took 15-20 min and I think I am savvy)    And some of the scheduling sites require a pass code and the individual to register themselves.   So, access to the vaccines has been hindered while this is being fixed.  I have already complained to the vaccination manager at the County and she is aware.

Our Agency has begun the task of completing Federal paper work in order to get approved to help inoculate people in the community and be able to provide to our clients.   I have gotten approval on the first segment of signing up and am working on the second segment.

Remember, outside family members or close friends are not part of your bubble and unless they have been tested and isolated for 10-14 days before being with you and you the same, it can be risky.   And if you see others from outside our county, have them and you quarantine for 10-14 days after.    We cannot be too careful!

Please do not let your guard down; even receiving the vaccine means until we have the majority of our community vaccinated we will need to continue to wash our hands, wear our masks and watch our closeness!  We have now seen a few people testing positive right after receiving their first dose of vaccine.   Remember it does take time for any antibodies to form and only one vaccine only promises about 40% efficacy.   Efficacy is greatly increased with the second dose and we need to strive for “herd immunity”.   This vaccine will not prevent you from getting the virus but it will keep your symptoms to a minimal and hopefully prevent need for hospitalization.   Do not let COVID fatigue get to you and get sloppy in protecting yourself and those that you love.   Let’s really become SONOMA COUNTY STRONG AGAIN and concentrate on taking precautions, sacrificing now  –  stay home, wash your hands, social distance as we can beat this!

    Thanks

    Di

Past President Steve Klick ask Past President Susan Nelson about her experience as Rotary President and if her experience created a bond with Rotary?

    Past President Susan Nelson:   1993-94

Susan was nominated to be president in 1991 when everyone was new to Rotary; she had no idea what the duties of president would look like. At that time the club was meeting in the bar at the Windsor bowling alley.  The Club was putting on the Hot Air Balloon Classic, a major undertaking, and a pool table was placed in the middle of the bar.   Thanks to the great training, support & time from the District Susan met all the challenges, the club even made a profit from the Hot Air Balloon event that year.  Susan suggested; don’t miss the opportunity if you have any interest in leadership. The training & support will have you prepared.  The bond with Rotary and friendship developed with Rotarians has been strong for over 37 years.

Speaker:     Andrew Gunther, Ph.D.  Environmental Scientist “Climate Change: The Science and the Solutions.” Andy served as the Assistant Chief Scientist for the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill Restoration Program from 1991 to 2002, and he was the first manager of the State of California’s program that monitors for toxic substances in San Francisco Bay.  In 2017, Andy won the Jean Auer Environmental Award from the San Francisco Estuary Partnership, which honors his “significant contribution toward improving environmental quality in the Bay-Delta Estuary.” He was recently appointed by California Governor Gavin Newsom to the San Francisco Bay Regional Water Quality Control Board. He also serves on the Bay Conservation and Development Commission and is a member of the Board of Directors of the Union of Concerned Scientists. Andrew has worked in the science field for 35 years but is not here to tell what is right & wrong, but to present facts of where we are today and the course we are on; he stated the carbon dioxide in the air acts like a blanket that warms the earth

We’ve known about the physics driving climate change since the 19th century. It’s time to have a conversation about what a 21st-century response looks like.

U.S. Presidents back to President Kennedy have been informed of climate change & the effects of burning fossil fuels and gases, and the consequences of increased carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

Andrew had several charts & graphs showing the increase of carbon dioxide and the temperature of the earth, carbon dioxide is increasing 200 times faster than any other time on record, carbon dioxide stays in the atmosphere for a long time, (decades to centuries) the CO2 absorbs the energy and instead of releasing into the atmosphere, it radiates it back to earth warming the planet.

Climate change is decided by emissions that we have already put in the atmosphere, the urgency is what action we are going to take now to decide what happens in the next 20-30 years.

    Climate disruption will affect:

    • Availability of Water  Productivity of farms, forests and fisheries
    • Prevalence of oppressive heat and humidity
    • Concentration of air pollutants
    • Geography of disease
    • Damages from storms, droughts, and wildfires
    • Property loss from sea-level rise and coastal erosion
    • Distribution and abundance of species

     What can we Change?

    • US emission not one simple solution
    • Energy efficiency: Appliances, new technology, LED lights
    • Electrify transportation: buses, trucks, cost of vehicles & batteries decreasing
    • Produce electricity without fossil fuels:  wind, solar, cost on solar decreasing
    • Carbon Farming:  soil management, use working land to draw carbon into the soil, create credit to farmers using carbon sequestration technique.
    • Support Business using carbon-negative practices,

The most expensive thing –        Do Nothing

Can We Change?  Yes,   are we willing to Change??

Andrew is inspired to make the truth about climate change accessible to all.

I found a wealth of information on Andrew’s website; http://andrewgunther.com/climate-change/#talks  he is also willing to do a presentation to a group of 20 or more, information to book Andrew on the website.

    Speaker:

JB Leep introduced Dave Hamelburg a presenter to the student’s on the importance of education and entrepreneurship.  Owner of Boomerang Plus.

The zoom presentation started pretty shakily, we could not see or hear the speaker, when the video appeared we were only seeing the bottom half of the speaker’s face, he sounded sick, distracted, and not prepared.  I am sure I was not alone thinking, this is not going to go well, who is this guy?   Suddenly, Dave corrected the camera, pulled off his baseball cap & wig, stated he felt better, and started his presentation.

The point demonstrated and expressed was the perception of the messenger, Dave shared that after his first presentation to students as a “teacher” he realized students mainly snoozed through his presentation.  Dave discovered by mocking student behavior: being late, unprepared, chewing gum, he gained the attention of the students, even having students tell him they could not understand him because of him chewing gum.  Dave is dedicated to sharing the importance of education and providing an opportunity to learn about becoming an entrepreneur.

His goal is to get students excited about learning & school, connecting them with business people of various fields, and demonstrating to them that when you give you get back; Boomerang effect.   Dave does roughly 10 presentations for juniors & seniors a year.  He has also created a Shark Tank for students.  The shark tank program is supported by students in various cores at the school, at Windsor High School, the culinary department provided soup & salad, & the Arts & Media core did the video of the program.  All programs have been performed on zoom during the pandemic.

Contact Dave if interested in being an adult shark.

Dave has been communicating with Raley’s in Windsor to occupy an unused space at the store where the students could create a student-run Art Store, Toy Store, T-shirt making & more and create a wall to display a shark tank demo.

    Questions:

    • Heather Cullen ask who will be supervising the student store and ask if volunteers were needed?  She also inquired about including information about agriculture and husbandry.
      • Dave said details on the store are being worked and yes to needing volunteers and yes to husbandry, however, stated that they would careful about the products they offered to keep a balance with Raley’s products.
    • Wally commented he felt there should be more awareness of this program, social media, and local TV.

If you are interested in participating in Boomerang Plus or would like more information you are welcome to contact Dave.

President Bill commented on our speaker from last week, Dave Humelburg, who got him and had him nervous at the beginning of his presentation.  He was happy it went well and enjoyed the presentation.

Pledge of Allegiance: was led by Barbara McChesney

President Bill may be avoiding COVID-19 but succeeded to get covered with Poison Oak!

After managing to get his Nurse and Doctor to dance to the coasters “Poison Ivy” while getting treatment for his itch, he decided it would be a good song to sing at the meeting, get everyone itching and twitching with him.

    Speaker:

JB Leep introduced Dominic Foppoli, Mayor of Windsor, co-founder, and owner of Foppoli Wines, Benevolo Wines, and Windsor’s own Old Redwood Brewing Company. He is also co-owner of Christopher Creek Winery.  Dominic is a member of the Active 20-30 club and was an Interact and Rotaract member.  Dominic is the youngest council member and Mayor in Windsor history; he is also the first mayor to serve three years in a row, and the first Mayor of Windsor to gain office through an electrical vote.

Dominic serves on the Mayors’ and Councilmember’s Association. The Town of Windsor was the Chair City of the Mayors’ and Councilmembers’ Association of Sonoma County for 2020. The Mayors’ and Councilmembers’ Association meets on a bi-monthly basis to connect and plan for the future on matters that affect the cities in Sonoma County.  In addition, Dominic has conducted weekly zoom meetings with the other 9 mayors in Sonoma County.

Dominic grew up in Windsor and always wanted to be mayor of Windsor.  His term in office has been anything but uneventful, he has dealt with floods, lawsuits, fire, more lawsuits, and more fire. He said in 429 days he will be 40 and join Rotary.

Dominic remains enthusiastic and honored to represent the Town of Windsor.

Questions & Answers:   Mayor Dominic Foppoli

    • Q  1. Can you tell us about the open seat with regards to appointment versus a special election? We hear it was recently decided to have an election on May 5.  I believe you were originally on the side of “appointment”. Could you talk about these issues and how you feel?
      • A  1. The appointment would save tax dollars; however, it was clear the residents want a City-wide election to fill the vacancy.  If interested in running for a vacancy you must be a Windsor resident, a US citizen, and 18 years of age,
    • Q  2. A large family will use more water, & utilities, which can easily put them into a higher more expensive tier for services. What steps are you taking to make Windsor a place families can afford to live? What efforts have you personally made to require the town to consider the size of the family living in a home?
      • A.. Dominic stated this is something he is aware of and has been bringing up to town, specifically with water usage.  There is the conversation as to how the town can implement billing, taking family size into consideration, to avoid family being billed at a higher tier rate.  He said this tier system was initiated to deter water abuse and high landscape water use.  Dominic noted her presence and comments at a Town Meeting would be very welcome & helpful.
    • Q 3. Timing on Civic Center Project?  How many years to re-locate town offices & finish new development?  Is the developer having financing problems, probability of downtown development?
      • A  3 Developer for residential project lost property, the town is looking for a developer to take over, it is shovel ready.
      • The town will be meeting with developer Robert Green for the presentation of 1st phase shortly. The town would like phase 1 to include City Hall, Library, School District & City Offices.   I understood Dominic to say 2-3 years before completion and moving on to phase 2.  This is a major project envisioned for the Town of Windsor from the beginning; it does require the support of the residents of Windsor.
    • Q  4.   Drag racing on Shiloh & Windsor roads late at night, as well as car-related activities like burning rubber.  This leads me to believe we lack protection in the evenings & nighttime. What is the level of Police protection after 9 pm daily?
      • A  4. Windsor has 24hour protection; Windsor also has the lowest crime rate in the county.  Traffic enforcement is a priority in the town and suggests if you hear or witness such activities report to the sheriff’s department, he is confident you will get a response, if not call or email Dominic directly.
    • Q   5. Is there a strategic plan to promote and roll out the vaccines in Windsor?
      • A  5.  Meeting with Dr. Mase on Thursday, they will determine the place people can go for the vaccine, and the amount to be received.  Communication has already begun with CVS & Walmart in Windsor.

    Covid update:

    1/12/21:

Total Cases:        21,463  (last week 20,015)

     New Cases:            Fri     315

                                       Sat    197

                                      Sun   199

               Mon is not reported

This is a total for 3 days of 711 (compared to 960 for 3 days??)

    Deaths:  218     (last week 196)

Hospitalized:   97 confirmed and 11 suspected    (last week 98 confirmed and 0 suspected)    These are alarming numbers of hospitalized patients with COVID and we are seeing this Statewide;  Southern California is beginning to ration oxygen and care!

People continue to travel and leave the area despite our Shelter in Place order and neither quarantine before or after their trips.

We have tested a Total of 422,807 and 15,689 recovered   (last week 400,410 in our county with 13,860 people recovered)

Still seeing the largest number of cases in the Latinos (66% and whites are only 27% )

Still seeing the largest level of positivity in Service and sales, with education climbing to 15.6%, then those unemployed and home care (my industry) at 2.8%

.  Close contact (meaning close family or friend spread) is at 40% and 53% is still under investigation.  We are seeing in our own employee’s positivity in our Latinos/Hispanics and being exposed by family members working in other industries or ignoring travel or gathering warnings.

Public Health Officer Mase extended our county shut down for another 4 weeks because of rising numbers in hopes to decrease the need for admission to facilities and to stop the spread.

Despite this, we continued to see people not taking this seriously.

Vaccines were begun….  As of Jan. 10th, 11,631 residents in Sonoma County have received the vaccine.    Vaccination rollout continues to be slow and nowhere where we hoped they would be by now.    Our Agency has offered to help inoculate people starting with our staff and then giving the public their injections.   We continue to wait for direction and notification.

Outbreaks continue in our senior facilities.   Inoculations in the senior facilities are a priority now that acute care hospitals have been completed.

I realize it is out there on the horizon; do not let COVID fatigue get to you and get sloppy in protecting yourself and those that you love.   Let’s really become SONOMA COUNTY STRONG AGAIN and concentrate on taking precautions, sacrificing now – we can beat this!

    Thanks

    Di

    Closing remark:

President Bill thanked Dominique for his presentation and quoted Mark Twain

“Always do right.  This will gratify some people and astonish the rest”

The meeting was adjourned @ 8:30 am
